Sandhill Cranes Sandhill Cranes are very special annual visitors that stop in --or rather on the sandbars next to-- Chief Whitcap Park every late September and October. They are big, gawky, awkward looking birds, whose need for a moving take-off and landing makes them naturally shy. They only weigh a few pounds, being mostly feathers, skin and fragile, hollow bones. Their distinctive throaty warbling call is produced by a tubular bony structure in their throats.
